The Pro’s and Con’s with audio books in downloadable digital formats

28 04 2007

Peter B Butler
With disadvantages associated with having audio books in CD formats such as length, costs, convenience, etc, it is now a better option to have them in downloadable digital formats.

Having audio books in downloadable digital formats eliminates the problems of lengths, costs, convenience, etc.

In other words, having audio books in digital formats now defies the limitations and disadvantages that both audiocassettes and CDs have.

One of the most important benefits of audio books in downloadable digital formats is the instantaneous nature in which an audio book can get from the producer to the customers.

For example, as soon as an audio book is produced, it can get to the hands of the customer within mere minutes in a downloadable digital format, but this can’t happen with audiocassette tapes and CDs.

Also, the cost to the producer is very low, unlike the cost associated with audiocassettes and CDs.

All of these are big advantages, but below are some of the biggest disadvantages of audio books in downloadable digital formats and how to solve them:

Bandwidth problems: Unlike how easy it is to download music on the Internet, it isn’t as easy to download complete audio books – because of their size.

While a musical song can be just 4 minutes long and take very little time to download, an audio book of about 3 hours would take far longer to download – depending on the Internet connectivity of the person

downloading.

As serious as this disadvantage seems, below are ways to still enjoy your audio books in downloadable digital formats, despite this problem:

Solution to the Bandwidth problems: This problem can be solved by doing the download in your free time, not when you want to get the audio book at the same time. For example, you can start the download

and go out to work or go to bed. When you return or awake, the download would be completed.

Or if you have slow Internet connection at home, you can look for alternative locations to download the audio books. If you have faster Internet connectivity in the office, you can do the download there.

Do ensure that you are allowed to do that in the office. In other words, talk to your employer about this first to be sure it is acceptable. After downloading the audio book you can then take it with you via a zip

disk or a flash disk to listen to at home.

Another solution to bandwidth and downloading problems is to take the time to search for and select audio book formats that are specially made for people who have low-bandwidth Internet connections.

These formats are usually those with the highest compression ratio thereby making the download lighter and faster.

8 Powerful Benefits of Audio Books to Teaching our Children

28 04 2007

Peter B Butler
There’s no denying the fact that most people hated reading as kids. Only a few kids enjoy reading, especially if there is an alternative.

Audio books have now made it possible for children to get better access to materials that they don’t like reading.

Of course they must still read, but reading any material and still hearing it makes the reading much more interesting.

Many schools have now taken audio books not just to the homes of their students but also in the classrooms.

Experts in the educational sector have agreed that audio books in the classrooms go a long way to help students more than normal books, especially those students who are just beginning to read or those who have difficulty in reading.

Below are 8 specific benefits of using audio books for students:

1. Using audio books to teach children in school gives them ‘variety’. Instead of just listening to their teacher, they benefit from the change that comes with ‘another’ teacher.

2. There are specific audio books prepared with children in mind that are not only educative but very entertaining. These types of audio books make learning much more fun than normal teaching.

3. Using audio books to teach kids in school will give the teachers more time to prepare for the next lesson. The teachers can play the audio book for the children while doing something else.

4. For children with reading difficulties, they can slowly follow the readings from audio books until it feels comfortable to read.

Simply following an audio book to read along while looking at the printed material in front of them can increase their learning skills by a very high percentage.

5. Audio books save money. Instead of buying dozens of books for a classroom, just one audio book can be played for all the students in the classroom.

6. Audio books that tell interesting stories are very helpful in times when the children have become too tired to read and study. Most importantly, popular stories that children love, will be very interesting for them to listen to.

7. Children don’t particularly like printed books as much as they do audio books. It feels much more comfortable for them to ‘listen’ to an audio book than ‘read’ a book.

8. Audio books also have children deal with the pronunciation of certain words that they would have difficulty with when merely reading them. By hearing the pronunciation and seeing it printed, they would better grasp it.

All in all, most children find it a great deal of fun listening to a lesson on audio, rather than having to read it. That is why children spend a lot of time watching movies, rather than reading.

No wonder more schools are embracing the technology of audio books for teaching their children.

From Audio Books To Downloadable Audio Books

27 04 2007

Peter B Butler
An audio book is the recording of a person reading aloud the content of a book. These audio books are also known as talking books or spoken books.
One of the best definitions of audio books was given by William Swanson in the article ‘I Hear America Reading’: ‘Audio books are one of those happy marriages of art and convenience loved by frenetic Americans. The idea … is to enable us to enjoy books – a traditionally solitary and concentration-intensive pastime – while doing something else – mowing the lawn, cruising the interstate – often in the company of others.’
Audio books have been available for decades, becoming more popular in the 60’s as books on tape, and more recently as books on CD.
The boom of the Internet technology and high-speed Internet connections made available another breakthrough in the industry: downloadable audio books.
Downloadable audio books are also known as digital audio books and that’s exactly what they are: digital versions of the audio books. They can be listened to on a computer, on a CD player or on a portable Mp3 player.
The best advantage of downloadable audio books, combined with the use of portable Mp3 players is convenience. You can listen to fiction and non-fiction best sellers, how-to books, biographies, children books and so on… while doing boring or repetitive tasks. This way, we can fill the ‘dead’ moments we all have in our lives and increase our knowledge at the same time.
In fact, today you can find almost anything you can think of in a digital format, including radio dramas from the first decades of the 20th century.
Downloadable audio books are becoming more and more popular these days because they are also cheaper than audio books on tape or CD. And the reason is obvious: you don’t need a storage medium.
‘Using Digital Rights Management (DRM) software these titles are automatically downloaded and a digitally signed when they are purchased and downloaded. These files can be played on any computer that has Microsoft Windows Media Player (version 9+). Once downloaded, the files can also be transferred to selected portable devices (devices that support Windows Media Player) or burned to a CD.
So if you always say that you don’t have time to read, now you’re out of excuses. Go get yourself a cheap mp3 player and buy some downloadable audio books……

Do you know these advantages of audio books?

26 04 2007

Peter B Butler
With the incredible advantage of listening to your favorite book instead of reading it, the popularity of audio books has now gone through the roof. There are now more and more book titles with audio book versions.
Think about it – with audio books you can now save that extra time you spend reading a chapter on your favorite motivational book each morning before you leave for work. Apart from saving extra time, you are gaining extra knowledge in the process.
You can simply put it on to play while you prepare for work or even play it in your car on your way to work.
No wonder children, adults and even oldies have fallen head over heels in love with audio books.
Below are some of the specific advantages that audio books have over normal hardcover or paperback books:
– Audio books are more cost effective to produce than hardcover and paperbacks. More so, those who love to conserve nature insist that if all books are audio instead of hardcover and paperbacks, this will save more trees and keep the earth better than it is today.
– You can select the exact track you want to listen to instead of flipping through several pages in the case of normal books. This saves a great deal of time and makes it very comfortable for you.
– You can listen to audio books while doing other things in the house, while commuting to and from work or even while jogging. With an audio book someone else does the reading, while you do the absorption.
– You can listen to an audio book when its dark (example – when you are out camping and you’ve got no lights) but you can’t read a book when it’s dark. So, with an audio book you can go on vacation and still enjoy what the audio book has to offer.
– You can save the time you spend reading to your kids each night before they sleep with an audio book. Unlike a normal paperback or hardcover book that you have to read to your kids, with an audio book you can simply play it for them until they fall asleep, thereby saving you the time.
More so, audio books that are specifically for children are more fun than your reading can be. You probably were not trained to talk like a rabbit, right? But most of the narrators of children’s audio books were trained to read in ways that children love.

5 good reasons for choosing an audio book

19 04 2007

Peter B Butler
Did you know that audio books are becoming more and more popular by each day? For example, in 2004, over $124 million worth of audio books were sold in the UK and $120 million in Germany during 2005. Experts say that this year the market is expected to rise by 20% in Europe, and audio books seem to be even more popular in the USA.
But why are audio versions a convenient way to ‘read’ a book?
1) You save time, because you can listen to an audio book anywhere and everywhere, and you can even do other things at the same time. You can listen when driving to and from work, when walking the dog, cycling, working around the house or at the computer, exercising, and so on. The possibilities are endless.
According to a recent survey, in the USA a person is driving an average of 1 hour and 13 minutes daily, which means over 440 hours a year for each driver, or 11 full-time work weeks. This is huge! Imagine how many things you could learn during this time by simply having your MP3 player with audio books at hand.
2) If you love reading but don’t have a enough time, audio books can give you the opportunity to read many more books that you would otherwise have time for. Audio books are a great way to fill the ‘dead’ moments we all have in our lives.
3) Audio books are good for older, ill or recovering people and can be a wonderful gift for someone in a nursing institution. This is a gift they can remember and enjoy time after time.
4) Audio books can be a blessing for blind people, disabled people or people with impaired vision. Everyone should have the chance to experience and enjoy a book and in many cases, this is the only way for such persons to do it.
Spoken books can help these people improving their education, help them developing new hobbies and habits and greatly enriching their life, both personally and professionally.
5) The most important skill a child can ever acquire is probably the ability to read, and audio books can be easily used to stimulate literacy in children. Books can be listened to by children while following the story in the paper book. Or they could listen just to gain and improve vocabulary and communication skills. If you want to instill in your child the love of reading, audio books can be a excellent start.
There are many more benefits of using audio books, but even these few reasons should be enough to convince you to enter the exciting world of the spoken books.

10 best audio books to improve your mind

18 04 2007

Peter B Butler
It’s indeed incredible that not many people pay a great deal of attention to what gets into their minds.
What we feed our mind is like what we feed our body. You see, the mind is the single most important factor in determining who you are and what you do as an individual.
If your mind is positive and creative, you can become all you ever dream of becoming.
Most of the highly successful people you see in the news today took a great deal of time to work on improving their minds.
On the other hand, if your mind is negative and inactive, it’s very likely you won’t amount to anything in life. Analysing the lives of some of the most notorious people in the world would reveal that they always fed their minds with negative thoughts.
The question that obviously comes to play here is – are we born with positive or negative minds?
I will quickly and firmly say NO to both!
We develop our minds by what we put into it. If we are continually putting negative information into our minds, this results to negative thoughts and ultimately negative actions.
So, if you want the opposite creative thoughts, it is pertinent to always get the right kind of information into your mind.
The most common way to do this is by reading the right kinds of books.
Sadly, because of the great demand on our time, only few people still read lots of books, especially after college.
We mostly only have time to read the newspapers and magazines. And guess what? Most newspapers only end up giving us bad news that further increase our negative state of mind.
If you want to really get positive and helpful information, you need to read books that contain such information.
Thankfully with the advent and popularity of audio books, anyone can get the right information into his or her mind without having to ‘read’.
You can enjoy the benefits of audio books while exercising, commuting to and from your work, etc.
For those who don’t know exactly the audio books to go for, below are some of the 10 best audio books to improve your mind.

I have added 50 books a year to my reading intake … without creating any extra time to read

15 04 2007

Peter B Butler
Whenever I got together with friends and business colleagues they were often discussing the latest book or talking about a particular author they enjoyed.
There were so many titles and authors that I wanted to learn from. I need to somehow find more time to read. We all lead busy lives yet somehow my friends and colleagues seem to manage it. I did not understand how they found the time to read.
At a late afternoon coffee get together another friend was sharing how he had just finished a certain book. I blurted out in my frustration How on earth do you find the time to read so much
It was a strange reaction. My friends looked at me, looked at each other and smiled. One of them said These are Audio Books we’re talking about. We don’t read’ per say, we listen, to an Audio Book
The penny dropped, I do remember one of them saying something about downloading. I missed the context of what was said that day and didn’t pay much attention to it. They had been talking about listening to an Audio Book, downloadable Audio Books even. All this time they had assumed I had known they were talking about this new website they had found www.audioitnow.com where you could download an audio book instantly.
One of my friends then pulled out her MP3 player. She then played an audio book for me to listen to.
She explained that this was how she had read’ over one audio book per week. She listened to an audio book while she prepared for work in the morning, while she did her exercises each day, while she commuted to and from work and any free time she had on her hands that didn’t involve using her mind.
I was surprised, to say the least, that I could have been doing the same thing in my spare time, instead of just commuting to and from work doing nothing.
You see, my work is one that requires a lot of my time involvement. I have to leave home quite early, spend over an hour on the road because of the constant heavy traffic and when I get to work, I work all day until break time and closing time.
From what this friend of mine explained to me, I knew I had to give audio books a try.
I did and was very impressed.
Now, I can proudly say I also benefit from the reading of up to 50 books each year.
Still don’t think it’s possible?
Fine, let’s do the math:
For an audio book that takes 4 hours, you can have it read to you in just two days – 1 hour each day while preparing for work in the morning and 1 hour each day while commuting to and from work. That’s 4 hours in 2 days.
So, if it takes you 2 days to have one audio book read to you, that will be 365 days in a year divided by 2. That will equal about 133 books each year!
That’s over double the original 50 audio books we were targeting, right?
Audio books are indeed the secret formula that many people use to get the value from the best books they want to read. With an audio book, you can forget the frustration you always had whenever you force yourself to read any book.
For the bookworms back in college that want to continue reading but can’t afford the time anymore, you now have a solution in audio books.
Whether you want to use your PC, MP3 player, CD or even a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), it is now possible and within your reach for peanuts

Is the Apple iPod the best mp3 player?

15 04 2007

Peter B Butler
There are Apple iPod users that wouldn’t trade their iPod for the world. On the other hand there are mp3 lovers who wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole.
As always, the truth is somewhere in the middle.
The Apple iPod was released in 2001 and in a very short time almost became a substitute for the term MP3 player. How? By having an impressive market share, over 80% of the hard drive based MP3 player market and around 70% of the entire MP3 player market.
This means that almost everyone has heard of the iPod, which is another reason for it selling so well, besides the real advantages, of course.
Let’s take a look at some advantages and disadvantages that can help you decide if the Apple iPod is the best MP3 player for you.
iPod is cool, trendy, fashionable, stylish, classy … whatever word you want to use to describe this. However, it is also one of the most expensive MP3 players out there. If you want to impress and the price is not a problem for you, the an iPod is a possibility for you.
Then it has genuine advantages: small size, very good sound quality, easy to use navigation with the click wheel and a large storage capacity. What’s more, the latest models can play video files and display pictures in multiple file formats. The iPod Nano also has a full color screen, a stopwatch and lap timer. Another plus is that you can find many cool iPod accessories.
When it comes to disadvantages, the iPod has a big one, especially if you’re an audio book lover. Downloadable audio books are becoming very popular and more and more websites are now offering them.
Unfortunately Apple have refused to enable the Windows Media capabilities of the iPod, while the majority of audio book publishers do request that their titles are available only in a copy protected WMA format. In this situation, you can only use iTunes to add new content to your iPod MP3 player.
Virtually all other MP3 player manufacturers support WMA files now, so it hopefully won’t be long until pressure from customers forces Apple to enable it.
Until then, there is an easy solution. You need to burn the files to a regular compact disc and then rip as MP3 to your iTunes. However, this might not be convenient for everyone.
Another drawback becomes apparent if you want to connect the iPod with your home stereo system. And that’s because the iPods do not have other needed output connections besides the headphone jack. In this case, you will need to separately buy a special docking station.
The good thing is that the docking station can also act as a charger for the battery, it has a remote control and output connections for video as well. However, this is an extra expense and you need to be aware of this.
For example, I’ve seen the iPod Shuffle 512 MB priced at $64 (or the 1 GB version at $94) and the docking station for the Shuffle is $34.
Also, the iPod does not play radio, record voice or have a text viewer. However, if all you need is to play music, this should not bother you.
Now you know some advantages and some disadvantages of the well-known Apple iPod MP3 player and you can make an informed decision.
And I think you already know this, but sometimes it’s good to be reminded: there’s no point to look for ‘the best mp3 player’. Because all you need is the best MP3 player for you.
